Is this an occupation or a name? COMPLETED THANKS
« on: Wednesday 29 May 13 16:14 BST (UK) »
Good afternoon, Chatters:

Your puzzle for the day is...

I have an Alice Walker (maiden name unknown), born in England (No town given) about 1795 but living in Wamphrey, Dumfriesshire, Scotland on the 1861 census - with son William and family.  Under 'occupation', she is marked as "Formerly Linsey Wolsey Lusavie Now Parker".  I have tried every which way putting in these words?names? but can find nothing.  I believe there has been an error on the part of the enumerator and that it is a name, the last of which should read "Walker" rather than "Parker" but it doesn't bring me any closer. ???

The image shows her occupation as Formerly Tinsey Wolsey Weaver Now Pauper which makes a little more sense.

Do you have access to the original image of the census instead of the transcription?

Linsey-woolsey was a type of cloth so it does make sense.

PS: sorry didn't realise others had posted similarly.

Thanks so much everyone...I didn't get an 'original' off SP as I had no credits left (!!) but I knew you would all turn up trumps.  Now it all makes sense.  Again, my sincere thanks to you all.
