Deciphering "Names" in ths Will
« on: Thursday 30 May 13 05:01 BST (UK) »
Hello all

Have transcribed many Wills but a bit out of practice, it's the names of Persons with whom this man has shares and property.
I'm getting on with the rest but keep coming back to try to make head of tail of these.
If anybody could assist I would be very grateful.
Please ignore the fact that it is a large page, Sarah has very kindly been instructing me as to how to place PDF on this site.
Hope I got it right this time.[/img]

With thanks

Regards, Kate

Agree with the Weston names of  George & William

Could the first name be Saul  ???

If you look at surname Simpson and word Saint not 100% sure if the

first letter of the name could be an ‘S’ ???

second letter possibly an 'a'

third letter possibly an ‘n’ or a ‘u’

last letter possible an 'e'
looking at the name George last letter of his name looks to be written in the same way

Are there any other words written on the document beginning with the same shape letter
- could the first letter be an 'L' = Lane  or a 'J' = Jane or Jone ???

The only suggestion I can make is to look at each letter individually and see if you can match the letters in other words to form the name  ???

Hopefully someone else may solve the mystery - Good luck  :)

I think it could be Saul. The last mark on that line seems to be a dash, rather than part of the letter L, and 5 or 6 of the lines above this end with the same mark. Perhaps it was intended to stop people adding words at the end of the line, rather like drawing a line after the wording on a cheque.

Agree the George and William suggestions.

The other looks like Jane to me.

Maybe this could be settled by a view of the Bill referred to, or even a
catalogue entry for it.

The first Christian name appears to be Julie, or it could be Jane as suggested by veeblvort but did ladies have the right to own or part own land then?

Yes, especially if they were single or widowed.

For the greater part of British history, it would have, on marriage,
become the property of her husband. There were exceptions though - for
example it could be bequeathed to her in such a way as to be beyond the
control of a husband or future husband, or, to avoid property going
out of the family, a lady might receive a life interest in property,
which would revert to another member of her own family on death.

ladyhawk says "The only suggestion I can make is to look at each letter individually and see if you can match the letters in other words to form the name "

The word above is 'the' and the end of it is the same as the end of this name.
The word below it is 'against' and the n in against looks the same as the second last letter of this name.
The second letter is a - in other words, with o in them, the o has the loop at the top not the bottom.
The first letter is anyone's guess, but Lane or Jane are the obvious conclusions though it doesn't look to me like either an L or a J ??? ??? ???

The other two names I agree with everyone else's interpretation.
