Army discahrge papers - help needed please
« on: Thursday 30 May 13 14:46 BST (UK) »
Im having trouble reading the wording on some discharge papers, the first part gives reasons for the discharge and I think it was on medical grounds as I think Ive read asthma within the text?

The second part is to do with his service record and I cant make out what the writng is underneath the statement of service box, does it mention Gibraltor?

Any help much appreciated

Can you scan again, so we can see the right hand side of the documents.  His discharge seems to be on health grounds of Asthma and other things.

Modifed - Ignore me, there was no space bar to move the scan along when I first looked, after refreshing the page, it's back and I can see the document properly. ::)

I can't get it all, but hopefully someone else can improve on it.

I read it as:
.. and that he has been repeatedly attacked with fits of asthma, which has been rendered still more  distress by extensive strictures of the urethra preventing the free (word not visible but probably passage)  of his urine, which at such times was more inclined to ? forth.  That he has the mark of a wound said to have received at Guadalupe in 1793.

It seems that there was another reason as the discharge starts:  I do hereby certify, that the Cause which has rendered it necessary to discharge the within-mentioned XX as stated on the opposite side, - what was on the other side?

Thanks all for the replies

Lizzie - I think it just means that his name is mentioned on the opposite side not any other reason as the other page just has his name, where he lived etc and the his statement of service which is the 2nd image I posted

It does start "And" though, as if the comment about asthma and his ureter are in addition to something else.  Perhaps it's just the way the army wrote things in the late 1700s.
