Anton Pilger from Lenngries
« on: Monday 03 June 13 10:26 BST (UK) »
This photo was taken in April 1943 at 'Lenngries, Upper Bavaria, Germany" as written on the reverse side.

The person on the photo is Anton Pilgeri (Pilger)? at the end of 1945 he was in captivity in Yaroslavl (Soviet Union) and presented this photo to one local boy, who recalls:
"In Yaroslavl, German prisoners lived in a big unfinished house, at the corner of the today's Nekrasov street and Lenin Avenue. Among the other prisoners Anton worked at the warehouses that was on Bolshaya Octyabrskaya (October) street. Alexander and his friends often exchanged with prisoners various trinkets (badges, etc.) for food and cigarettes. How exactly Alexander met Anton, he does not remember, but he, Anton, stood out from the others, because, in the words of Alexander, was a "goner", looked bad, though like all other prisoners was always dressed neatly and cleanly. On the exchange he had practically nothing and Alexander began to feed him just for sake. One day, he invited Anton to his house. Prisoners in Yaroslavl walked through the city without convoy and Anton, from time to time visited Alexander. He came into the house, sat down by the stove and basked. Alexander's mother always gave him something to eat, although the family lived rather poorly. Sure, because of the language barrier there was not so much communication. As a sign of gratitude for his kindness Anton presented this picture to Alexander.
At the end of 1945 or early 1946 Alexander walked past the house where the prisoners lived and wanted to convey some products to Anton, but he was there no more. According to the other prisoners, he was sent somewhere, and it was unclear whether he was sent home, or just transferred to another camp. Since then, nothing was known about him. "

During the WWI Bavarian Mountain Infantry (mounted) units were stationed at Prinz Heinrich Kaserne (Jägerkaserne) at Lenggries. These troops fighted during WW II in Poland, France, and on the Russian front.
The ribbon looks like Ostenmedaille http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Orden/mwio.html

yes, can be Bilgeri too, moreover the owner of the photo named the soldier as "Pil'geri" - l' means soft Russian 'L'. But there are also Pilger in Munich phone books.
Meantime, have found that during WWII troops from Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 98 http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Kasernen/Wehrkreis07/KasernenLenggries-R.htm were stationed at Lenggries, were photo was taken.

I did it.  :)

His name was Anton Bilgri, from Lindenberg, Westallgäu.
He had survived the Soviet prisoners camps (1944-1949) and had returned back home.
Died in 1992.

Happy New Year to everybody and good searches in the next year!  :)
