getting some fantastic information here, thanks to everyone.

Not knowing much about army ranks, I've done some googling and is this right?
The men with one stripe are lance bombardiers (bombardier being the artillery equivalent to corporal)
The man with two stripes is a bombardier
My great uncle, the shoeing smith, is a "gunner" rather than a private.

The information about the signaller is great. Do you think this would have been a discreet unit, then?

I agree about the photo - y'now, it's the most clearly defined photo from that WW1 era that I've seen. You can see every frayed cuff and trouserleg and the weather-beaten, almost over-washed material of their respective uniforms. Everyone's in focus, bar the dog's head!

And everyone's been issued with a brand-new looking white lanyard.

Possibly taken shortly after his attestation - uniform looks in better shape! Boots, although worn in, aren't worn down.

On the Great War forum? I'd forgotten I had posted on that site! Yes, he was lucky to get out of France but I think that going from there to Mesopotamia was definitely a case of frying pans and fires.
