Marriage certificate question
« on: Monday 03 June 13 20:23 BST (UK) »
Hi all, my parents married in the parish church of Great Braxted in 1954, on the certificate it states that they married "according to the rites and customs of the church of England by licence. Would this be the same as a superintendant registrars licence? Could there be some other document other than their actual licence I might be able to obtain?
Any help on this would be most welcome.

Usually when a church register mentions a licence it's referring to one issued by the church authorities. See http://www.yourchurchwedding.org/youre-welcome/do-we-need-a-marriage-licence.aspx for more on these - although this describes the current situation, I think it would have been more or less the same in 1954, particularly as regards Special and Common Licences.

The first place to ask about records of the issue of Common Licences would be the diocesan record office - in this case the Essex Record Office, which holds records for the Diocese of Chelmsford. It would also be possible for any papers which were retained in the parish to have made their way to the record office at some point, so you could ask them to check this as well. (There may be an online catalogue - it's not one of my counties of interest, though, so I'm not sure.)

If it was a Special Licence (much less common), there may be records at the Faculty Office in Westminster, or else they might be able to advise further - contact details on the site I linked to. Again, there's a chance something might have been kept in the parish and deposited at the record office.

Hope this helps,
Arthur

There were various licences used to allow marriages in the Church of England.
See my website at

http://anguline.co.uk/cert/certificates.htm

for examples of various licences (click on the Marriage Licences and Certificates link and scroll down past the certificates).

The site also given examples of other useful documents.

Thank you Guy, I think I need to email the ERO and see if there is anything there, I think my parents needed the licence because my Father was a Polish national who came to this Country after the war as a displaced person. I know they needed the Polices permission to marry.

A little off topic but have you seen the Polish Resettlement Camps in the UK website at
http://www.northwickparkpolishdpcamp.co.uk/

It may give some insight to the general experience of the time.
