Sarah Bryant
« on: Tuesday 04 June 13 10:18 BST (UK) »
Sarah Bryant married Thomas Rich (widower) Shepton Mallet Dec. qtr. 1839. They lived Stoke Lane where he was a farmer and had a daughter Sarah Jane who married William Padfield. Sarah Rich was a widow in 1891 still at Stoke Lane. Please does anyone know where and when Sarah Bryant was born and who her parents were? Thanks.

If you get the marriage cert it will tell you who her father was and what he did for a living.

Have you found her in any of the censuses?

They should tell you when and where she was born(except the 1841 that only says if born in the county they lived in or not)

The 1851 census at Stoke Lane ref HO107/    1933 Folio   113  Page   16
Gives her as being born abt 1817 and in St Mary's Bristol.

This is a possible baptism, but until you can confirm her father's name it may not be the right one.

Hi. Carol
Thanks for the reply. The Rich family were quite a large family in Stoke Lane now Stoke St. Michael I believe. I know that Thomas died 1871 and that Sarah was still on the 1891 census and she had her daughter Sarah Padfield with her and they were stated as having their own means although the husband of daughter Sarah was still alive. He seems to have moved and taken the children to Chew Magna and had a housekeeper who he later married. Daughter Sarah died Wells March qtr. 1899. Thanks again.    Ann.

I am trying to help find where she was born  ;)

The 1851 and later censuses say Bristol,c 1817,but as I discovered earlier today that the 1861 says Stoke Lane. However that may just have been an over enthusiastic census enumerator and his dittoes.

I really don't think you can progress with this one for certain until you get her 1839 marriage cert.

It is strange see seems to have taken her son in laws surname in 1891 - Padfield

I wondered at first if it were just an enumerator error, but she didnt die as Rich, but rather this looks like her death under Padfield
Jul/Aug/Sep 1896
Shepton Mallet   5c 283
Sarah Padfield age 80

But as for her birth and parents, you are back to pre Civil Registration and pre census days, so will be reliant on a parish record of a christening, if she was christened.

In order to have any hope of finding the right one, you need to glean as much info as poss from later records.
Censuses indicate a birth around 1817 in Bristol

If you get the 1839 marriage cert, as Carol suggested, (uness you ave access to the P R of te marriage) then you will see who she names as her father - this will be an important step when trying to folow up potential christenings for her.
You never know, if Dad has an unusual name and occupation, and lived till 1851, you may be lucky enough to find a birthplace for him!
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Sorry for the late reply.  I had come across this death of Sarah Padfield and it was at Stoke Lane but I had discounted it as there was also a large Padfield family in the area. I have also found a death of Sarah Rich in Bristol and wondered if she had returned to Bristol if that is where she was born? Thanks for your help.
