Hi both.I would think that the William Lamonby innkeeper is probably our ancestor as there are a few innkeepers later on in my tree. Will have a look at Thomas Ismay. Many thanks Deborah

I've now had a look at a map to locate Wigton.  I guess you might also be interested in the Carlisle entries?

Also did you know that a John Lamonby is the constable for Brisco, Carlisle ca 1746?  Have you seen  that several Lamonbys opposed the election of Lowther in the 1770s?

Marriage licences:
11 Mar 1726/7

Charles Fidler yeoman of Brisco & Catherine Irwen of Kirklinton, spinster
marriage to take place at St Cuthberts, Carlisle or Kirklinton

John Lamonby of Brisco, yeoman
Margaret Cape of ditto, spinster
bondsman: Thomas Stephenson of Brisco, gentleman

Adam Peirson of Cardew Lees, Dalston yeoman
Mary Lammenby of Haxtel, Dalston, spinster

Isaac Nelson of Knockupwards, Grinsdale, yeoman, single-man, above 30
Agnes Lewthwaite of Kirkandrews upon Eden, 28, single-woman
marriage to take place at K upon E or St Cuthberts

01 Feb 1752
Thomas Lamonby of Cardew Lees, Dalston, single-man, above 27, yeoman (marks)
Eliz Reay of curthwaite, Westward, single-woman, above 27
bondsman: Robert Wilson of Cardew Lees, yeoman
marriage to take place at Westward

02 Feb 1761
George Dawson of Boons Allendale Northumberland, yeoman
Ann Lamonby of Brisco St Cuthbert
bondsman: John Lamonby of Brisco maltster
marriage to take place at St Cuthbert

I have looked up to end 1762 omitting one or two entries for Grange.

The original licences no longer exist - the index is all that is available.

If you haven't already done so, it might be useful to look at the actual marriage registers for parishes of interest.  From 1754 bride and groom were supposed to sign and likewise their witnesses.  You can get valuable information from comparing signatures and identifying the witnesses.  I know this won't help with William's parents but it might well provide avenues to explore.

Hope it helps
Deborah

Hi Deborah, many thanks for all that information  St Cuthbert's church is in the centre of Carlisle, near where I live, I will see if I can access their parish records.
Best wishes Julie

Hi Jim, nice to meet you. William Lamonby was my great grand father, son of Josef Lamonby and Ann Finlinson.
I would be happy to learn more.
