Parish Register - Marriage by Banns - Handwriting to Decipher

Hi Rootschatters,

Just wondering if someone could help decipher a word in a marriage entry in the 1752 Marriage Register of Felsted, Essex.

I have attached a copy.  Half way down the page there is an entry as follows:

30 Dec 1846 - Samuel Gentry and Mary Dolbin ?? by Banns

Can anyone tell me what that word is after "Dolbin" and before "By"?  Is it another Name?

I think it says "Sojorner" - or sojourner as we spell it today!

As in temporarily resident.

Someone who had only recently moved to the parish might also be described as a sojourner.

The more you look at it, it is "sojorner" - just that it wasn't I would I have come across in the registers.  What a strange description to use about a person, I wonder why, maybe "not of this parish" or something along those lines?

This is my word for the day.

Sojourner seems to be mainly related to the entries in the parish registers after Hardwicke's Marriage Act. Entries after 25 March 1754 had to record the spouses' parishes of residence, most spouses were stated to be 'of this parish,' but this did not necessarily mean much since the legal requirement for this description was only three weeks' residence in the parish.

Thank you.  I will copy this explanation against the entry into my family tree.

I googled the Marriage Laws and found the Act that you are referring to and that was an interesting read.
