Captain Sampson's bar
« on: Thursday 06 June 13 21:19 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone.
There's a famous story about a captain Sampson who was the first person to sell Guinness in the U.K.  in his premises in Skidden Hill,St.Ives circa 1760.It is said that after sailing to Dublin with his cargo of fish and potatoes he would bring back the "black stuff" to sell to his customers.A deal was signed by none other by Arthur Guinness himself so that captain Sampson was the only person who was able to sell his product in this country. After the death of captain Sampson, his son carried on this agreement until his death. Can anyone tell me the christian names of the Sampson's involved, and maybe the names of their spouses as it could be a family connection of mine.
       many thanks

if you use the Cornwall Record Office search

http://crocat.cornwall.gov.uk/DServe/searchpage.htm

and look for for Sampson with Ives in title, there are a few refs. One mentions "dwelling house wherein one Nicholas Sampson formerly dwelt".  Searching the opc database of Nicholas Sampson finds a marriage in 1767 and he is noted as mariner

http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=marriages&id=483833

He died in 1817, age at burial given as 72.

There are other couples with same surname producing children at the same time, William & Martha, Edward and Jane, William & Honour, this William also noted as mariner on his marriage. There's also a Thomas Sampson noted as mariner at marriage, either 2 of them or same man marrying twice 25 years apart.

the record office search is an index, showing what you can order from the Record Office or view if visiting. What is it that you are trying to "open up"?

You can order a copy of the document

it's as well to get a few documents at the same time because there's a minimum charge.

It might make sense to seek the views of the Guinness archives in Dublin. They have quite detailed records and very experienced and obliging staff.
