The attached picture shows 2 buses in Kennington

Now am I right in thinking 1 is a tram and the other is a trolley bus?

Please put me out of my misery.

Hi, I would say they are both trams; I can't see any overhead cables for trolley buses...

Trams run on rails and Trolleybuses don't. The overhead electric wires are also different. See this article:

http://www.trolleybus.net/subhtml/trams-trolleybuses.htm

Photo isn't big enough to see if one of them is running on rails - any chance of a larger version, please?

I think you're right!

See here for a picture of a London Trolleybus:

Very much like an old London double-decker?

And trams here:

The second tram is I think known as a 'Feltham' car.

Both vehicles are trams & you can't see any trolley wires because there are none - the pick-up arms on both vehicles are stowed down onto hooks on the roof.

They are using a pickup beneath the centre of the tram, drawing power from an underground rail. As a pre-teenager around 1950 I used to watch them change from the trolley wire to the underground rail at a place in Tooting when they were going into London, & vice-versa on their way out to Wimbledon.

The photo shows the slot for the underground rail as the darker line in the middle of each set of 3 lines.
