Date Tintype? boys with unique scarves
« on: Friday 07 June 13 20:48 BST (UK) »
Can you please help with dating, and possibly identify the country where the photo was taken? This is similar to the previous photo.

... We don't know if relatives in the U.S. received the blanket and scarves as a gift from New Zealand, or if they received the photo from relatives in New Zealand ? or elsewhere.

It's another big ask, thanks for taking the time  :)
Kate

Sorry not to be able to help date but just notice the child in the middle and the one on the right may be girls as their coats are buttoned up the wrong way for males.  (two buttoned one way and one buttoned the other)

Must say New Zealand or Scotland did come to mind regarding the scarves and patterns on them.  Is that a waterfall in the backdrop picture or can I see some sort of Maori figure/head.

Tintypes are in reverse.Definitely 3 boys.
I would suggest 1870's.Tintypes were more popular in the USA & were used for studio photos into the 20th.C.In the rest of the world they weren't so popular & lasted to the mid 70's but most photographers bypassed this process in favour of albumin prints or CdeV's as they're known which became the process of choice from the 1860's.So could be NZ but more likely USA.

The patterns on the scarves on this photo (and the one of the adults on another thread) are somewhat similar to some of the Maori patterns on this link:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1157&bih=565&q=maori+designs+and+patterns&oq=maori+designs&gs_l=img.1.2.0l10.1385.4036.0.6154.13.8.0.5.5.0.101.697.7j1.8.0...0.0...1ac.1.16.img.C1T7I5tJbho

Is it worth putting a link on the New Zealand boards to this thread and the one about the adults ??

I don't think they are NZ Maori patterns

Thank you Janette, it appears the scarves may be from elsewhere and the family from the USA.

They remind me of tribal patterns used by (red) indian. (I am loathe to use that expression but don't know the correct term, my apologies) -  native Americans (advised of correct terms by Jim thankfully)

They are very intricately woven by someone with great skill and an eye for detail.  Very lovely items
