Hi

Can anyone work out mother's maiden name?
I haven't been able to spot it.

Bengal Margaret appears to be from a fairly well to do family, so I'm not sure she would have been a servant as GMC's margaret was .... :-\

Thanks for all that..certainly possibilities to look at.

I still think that Mrs Looker will be the key - surely 'friends' dont randomly pick up dischargees from workhouses???

The freebmd record for Phoebe's birth  Dec 1916 Luton 3b 587 shows
Dawson    Phoebe    Dawson    Luton    3b   587

I gather this means there will be no details of her father?

GMC
NAYLER - Brockley and Lewisham
FORD - Brockley and Lewisham
RAYSON - Brockley & Lewisham
CUNNINGHAM in Australia but not getting very far!!
And many others.........

All it means is that the baby was given the mothers surname, it is unlikely that the father is listed but not certain.

You say that she was born on the 12th but not discharged until the 31st, before her mother, could she have been baptised before she was adopted.  Vicars were notorious in making comments in the margins re illegitimate births

Is there any signifcance in the term "war baby"? (other than she was born during a time of war - does it imply that she was conceived during war time? the father was away at war? or killed in the war?)

If Horace Looker was a corn merchant might he appear in any directories? Voters registers?

Hi

"At one point" . . . . .
MKD was an "(art) student"
Her sister Ivy an "assistant secretary" (typist?)
Her father Henry a "policeman".
Does that make them a "well-to-do" family or an ordinary working family?

Henry may have "thrown her out", there are many possibilities.
Includes giving/writing down a non-occupation.
