Thanks Maggie - it had to be serious to kill the child and I didnt think Colic could kill but may be wrong!

'Colic' is a symptom rather than a disease.

There is a nasty condition called interssusception, where sections of the bowel telescope into each other and if untreated can cause obstruction, infection and if not treated possibly death.  There is severe intermittent abdominal pain.  Although it's treatable today this would not be an option in 1723.
