Whitchurch Parish records

Does anyone know if Whitchurch parish records are online, or available on CD?

They seem to be very difficult to come by!

Thanks Gadget.

I had already looked through the archive books Shropshire PRs but Whitchurch isn't included.

I have a vague recollection that I read somewhere that the rights to Whitchurch PRs were 'owned' by someone or other who wouldn't allow them to be reproduced in any shape or form. I was hoping I was wrong but, when you look at lists of stuff available from the FHS etc, Whitchurch parish church records are never included.

It would be good to get to the bottom of that as its slap bang in the middle of where my Shropshire ancestors came from. Typical!  ::)

Sorry, Jill. It does look as if Whitchurch is one of those parishes !

It might br worth contacting Shropshire Archives or the Shropshire FHS to see if they can help  :-\

As I have said on similar threads about Whitchurch if you are looking for baptisms prior to 1700 you are only likely to find the father's name listed.

That's pretty true of most earlier baptism parish records, William.

I'd just be happy to locate some Whitchurch records - obviously they should have them at Shropshire Archives but I don't live anywhere near.

Hi Jill,

Various Whitchurch PRs from 1627 to 1902 are at Shropshire Archives.

Shropshire Archives will do a 'Short search service' for £5.00

"a quick ‘look-up’ in a single source such as parish registers or trade directory. This search is for a maximum of 10 minutes.
Cost: £5 for the search. If a photocopy/print is the best way of showing the information, this will be included for UK customers."

Contact details here: http://www.shropshire.gov.uk/archives.nsf/open/9125832444E8E79A802578D400473213

Or there's always Shropshire Lookup Requests on RootsChat.

Regards,
Maurice

Thanks Maurice.

I did use them many moons ago but this time I really need to browse the records for clues rather than to look for a specific person or event.

Looks like I shall have to wait until the person or establishment with rights to them has a change of heart. Perhaps Ancestry or some other organisation will make them an offer they can't refuse.... ;D

Jill, the cheapest and easiet way is to order the microfilm on loan through the family history library.  The catolgue reference for the Whitchurch register can be viewed at https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/489159?availability=Family%20History%20Library.  I have ordered many films through the service which is truly excellent. They can be viewed at one of the LDS Family History Centres (usually one in each church) or usually through your family history society. John
