Any Aikens/ Aickens in Cavan?
« on: Tuesday 18 June 13 08:59 BST (UK) »
Looking for a Richard, father of William, Aiken/Aicken/Aikin in Co Cavan, in the 1800's. William moved to Belfast and worked as a bookbinder.  Any info out there? Thanks in advance! :)

It really helps to give an idea of dates- 'in the 1800s' covers 100 years and that's probably why you didn't get any replies.

A William Aiken, bookbinder, Belfast died 1888- father William was also a bookbinder- are these 2 Williams the son and grandson of Richard?
"Letters of Administration of the personal estate of William Aiken late of 29 Upper Townsend-street Belfast Bookbinder who died 30 March 1888 at same place were granted at Belfast to William Aiken of 29 Upper Townsend-street Belfast Bookbinder the Father."

A likely death registration gives William's age as 36 (born c1852)-

Thanks, Aghadowey, for the info on William Aiken.  Unfortunately "my" William's dates don't match up with either of the 2 Williams you mention.  He was a bookbinder in Belfast, but I believe he was born in Co Cavan around 1834 and died around 1905 (although I can find no exact date for either event), and his father was Richard.  His son was William too - just to confuse things further!  It's certainly a coincidence, but I'll have to just keep on looking. Thanks again. :)

Strange to find so many William Aikens that were bookbinders in Belfast!

Here's yours in the 1901 census-

If William died c1905 in Ireland there should be a death registration but perhaps the spelling of the surname is making it difficult to find the correct entry.
