I first thought it could be Junior but, like others, the final letter is more n-ish than r-sh!

Do you have any other children of Gavin Patterson that might help identify the word or, as Valerie has suggested, maybe a bit more of the page so that we could see the form of the entries.

Just looked at the page on SP  and see that either they just list the place of residence after the father's name or list occupation and residence. The next but one entry is for an Elizabeth Cochran  d of  James Cochran Smith in <place>  So Joiner or some other occupation seems the most likely.

None of the other baptisms to children of Gavin Pat*erson, parish of  Glassford,  have the word after his name. His wife appears to be a Jan(n)et Rodger.

Thanks for all your replies.

Yes, I initially read the last letter as an 'n' and thought it must be an occupation but couldn't find one with a similar spelling.

The OPR is for one of my Paterson ancestors in Nethershields, so I can't imagine why the surname Junion would appear on the registration for Gavin Paterson's daughter. There was a previous Gavin Paterson, farmer in Nethershields (presumably the father or grandfather of this Gavin Paterson), who was a covenanter and imprisoned in 1685 for participating in the Battle of Drumclog in 1679.

I agree that the term junior wasn't in use at the time but it does, in that connection, make sense.

Cheers,

Rodeo

Hi Gadget

Yes, my 4X great grandparents were indeed Gavin Paterson and Janet Rodger(s).

It's really odd, Rodeo. The first entry on the page was  Andrew <someone> who is listed as Shoe maker, so it does look as if it is an occupational or other delimiter or some kind. When was Gavin born ?  as there are some births going back to the 1740s and wonder if there was a father/son  :-\

It still looks more like the ns on the page than the rs though  :)

Hi Gadget

This Gavin Paterson was born in 1734 in Glassford.

I just had another look at that cryptic word and it appears to end in 'son'. Is the first letter, in fact, a 'J'?

Cheers,

Rodeo
