Help Deciphering OPR Record
« on: Wednesday 19 June 13 08:11 BST (UK) »
Can anyone make out the word following the name Gavin Paterson in this OPR record?

It appears to read: Agnes Patterson (sic) daughter to Gavin Paterson (illegible) in Nethershields...etc.

I thought it was Junior but it looks as though the final letter is an 'n'.

Many thanks.

Cheers,

Rodeo

I don't think it is Junior.  I'd say it's likely to be the name of his occupation, but I can't make it out.

Some of the upward strokes are really light and without something similar to compare it to I'd say it was an occupation of "Joiner"

Hi, I'm not sure if the term "junior" was in use in that era and tend to agree that it's more likely his employment which I can't decipher either. I'm sorry it's not any help, but just a thought.

I read it as Junior too, though I agree the last letter looks more like an n.

Do other fathers on the page have occupations after their names?

Added: a websearch reveals that Junion is a surname. Could "Agnes Patterson" be the child's given names and Junion the family name? Do other children in surrounding entries have their surnames written out?

Hi

I feel the last letter is an "n", as it is written in the same way as the "n" on the words Gavin and Patterson.

I don't think it is an "r" as it is different to the "r" at the end of the word daughter.

Can we have a larger piece of script to work on please?
