I think I may have made a break through re John Luke 1844-1876.
There is a marriage on Ancestry for a John Luke, of full age, Mariner to Elizabeth Elliot on 14th April 1871 at St Peter's Church, Liverpool.  John's fathers name is given as John and his occupation was a forester.

There is also a departure from Liverpool to New York for a John and Elizabeth Luke on 11th September 1871 on the SS City of Baltimore.

I have John as being in Liverpool on the 1871 Census (2nd April 1871)

What do you think, regards Julia

Julia,

Looking at my records.  I see another Elliot.

David Smith Married Mary Jefferson 28th November 1797. They had 4 children of which Mary Ann Smith was married to George Elliot in 1848 in Gainsborough.

Mary Ann Smith was born 1803 at Barton le Street, Yorkshire.

Hi Clive,

In the past I have done quite a lot of family history but have had a rest for sometime due to eye problems but I am now on the go again!

Eliza Smith baptised 31st July 1814 St Michael's Church, Barton le Street married John Luke on 26th July 1838 at St Michael's Church, Barton le Street. Eliza's father David Smith was a "Groom of the Chamber, Castle Howard"  John's father was James a Mason.  David Smith was one of the witnesses to the marriage.  (taken from an original copy of the Marriage).  If you would like anymore info about the family I may be able to help.

Julia

Julia,

You are doing just great. I am sure you are happy to be able to continue your good work.

If you get any further "Luke" info I would be happy to receive it. Likewise if on my travels I will pass on any details I find.

Clive
