Annie Doran - Penrith
« on: Sunday 23 June 13 17:03 BST (UK) »
Can't find out what happened to Annie Doran, born 1903 in Penrith. Her parents were Sarah Anne McGarr and William Doran. The last record found showed she was living at the Railway Tavern with her parents, in the 1911 census.
Any help would be most appreciated.

There are numerous marriages in the index for people of that name, some in Cumberland.
I would imagine one of them is her.
Difficulty will be finding which one without a census to refer to, or buying loads of certs!

When did her parentrs die? Have you checked for a will for either of them? Wills can be a great resource for finding the married name of daughters.
Or did she witness the marriage of any siblings marrying after her, using her married surname?
Or be the informant at either parents death?

They are just some ways that might reveal her surname

I have looked for this person a long time and probably will need to order some certificates to help with this brick wall. Thanks for your suggestions lizdb and GeoffE.

Here is the Probate index entry for Sarah Ann

Sarah Ann Doran, of Railway Tavern Penrith Cumberland, widow, died 12 Feb 1921, Probate Carlisle to Mary Ann Bond (wife of John Alfred Bond) and Sarah Jane Fiddler (wife of William Fiddler) effects £601 16s 7d

So Sarah was a widow, so her husband had died pre1921.

Are Mary Ann and Sarah 2 of her daughters, that she has named as executors?

It would be worth getting the actual will to see if Annie is mentioned.

Yes, I see looking back over the censuses that the eldest 2 children  of her marriage to Richard Mason were indeed a Sarah and a Mary.  Quite common to choose your eldest children as executors.

Seems the pub was very much Sarah Anns concern. In the censuses husband(s) Richard and then William have one occupation, then it is Sarah Ann that is the innkeeper!

All details about ordering wills are on here

Hopefully, as long as Sarah Ann leaves a bequest to all her children, or at least to Annie, you will soon know if Annie was married by the time the Will was written, and if she was what her married surname was.  And if not married by the date the will was written, it will at least narrow down your search a bit.

She was only 17 wasn't she? :)

Aha - good point.
I forgot to do the Maths!

Yes, only 17 ish when mum died, may have been even younger when Will written.

Lets hope she either married very young, or the will gives some other clues as to what became of Annie after her parents deaths, and thus which later marriage may be the right Annie
