Montreal newspapers
« on: Monday 24 June 13 08:32 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm attempting to locate an ancestor whose last known location was Montreal in 1907. I have already searched the 1911 census without any success and given that the lady in question was single I'm going to slog through available online newspapers between 1907 and 1911 for any sign of a marriage or in the worst case, a death.
Which titles are not worth looking at for local news and announcements?
I'm guessing its easier to list those that aren't useful than those which are.

You could also check the Drouin collection available on ancestry.ca (libraries have subscriptions, family history centres, take out a limited subsciription).  This collection of parish records might yield a marriage.

Or you can provide some information on the ancestor and a look-up in the Drouin Collection can be done for you.

Thank you for the suggestion Jacquie but that isn't necessary as I know someone who can do that.

The Montreal Gazette has an online archive at this link ....

http://news.google.ca/newspapers?nid=Fr8DH2VBP9sC

If you go to the link to 'browse all newspapers' in the upper right side you can see what else might be available. It doesn't look like the other major Montreal English paper, The Montreal Star, is included.

Thanks Polar Bear!

I was under the impression that there was a newspaper digitisation project underway at the Canadian archives though it was in its early stages. Mentioned in a blog of theirs, might find the star in that.

Correction, I was confusing newspaper digitisation with the ongoing microform digitisation.
