« on: Thursday 27 June 13 05:25 BST (UK) »
Hi I have seen a few queries about the Natal Mounted Police before so I wonder if anyone can help identify the following people in the photograph attached and share some info on the NMP. Inspector/Major Oliver Dimmick appears in some of these photos.
DIMMICK, OLIVER
Rank: Major Date of Death: 22/09/1916-What caused his death?
Regiment/Service: South African Mounted Rifles 2nd
Grave Reference
Cemetery DURBAN (ORDNANCE ROAD) MILITARY CEMETERY (See picture below).
Apparently he is buried in a steel coffin at Old Fort after his body was exhumed and brought to Durban from Windhoek. How long did the NMP fight in South West Africa?
Additional Information: Husband of Mrs Dimmick of Pietmaritzburg, South Africa.
A picture of his grave can be seen at this link http://www.eggsa.org/cgi-bin/library/searchGraves.pl

My husband is the great-grandson of Major Oliver Dimmick. Was there any question in particular that I could answer about him for you?

Regards
Michelle

Coming a bit late to this discussion, but my great uncle Gordon Leggatt was a member of the Natal Mounted Police 1903-12 and had the medal for the Natal Native Rebellion.

I do not know what rank he achieved, only that he enlisted as a trooper. I have only one photograph of him and he isn't obviously recognisable as one of the people in the photos shown.

In 1914 he returned to England to enlist in the war, and was made 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery. He was killed by enemy artillery fire at Bazentin-le-Grand, France on 16.9.1917 during the Battle of the Somme. As that was only a few days before Oliver Dimmick died, it's possible that they both died in the same battle, and that Inspector Dimmick's body was repatriated to SA.

Sorry, in the above post I mis-typed the year wrong of my great-uncle's death. It should of course be 1916, not 1917.
