Hi!
My husbands great grandfather was the manager of Basted Paper Mills.  I believe they no longer exist, but wonder if anyone can tell me anything about them.  Or possibly have any idea of where I may get information on them from.
I would appreciate any help anyone can give me as I cannot travel at the moment so cant even get near there at the moment!!

Look forward to any replies
Regards
Emma

Hi Emma,

I don't know the answer  - but I know someone who does!!

Try the following person she is secretary of the Papermakers Association - she has given me lots of useful information - she has lists of Papermakers and apprentices from the 1860's onwards.
I presume your great grandfather was also a papermaker as well as a manager - but I am sure she will point you in the right direction.
Just thought - better PM you with her email address!!

Cheers

Keith

Hi Hackstaple,

What an interesting site - I am sure it will help Emma - It has me and my lot worked in the Dartford Paper Mill!!

It is always nice to get the story behind the jobs your ancestor did.

Cheers

Emma,
I do know where they were!   As a child I used to visit my grandparents who lived in Ightham.  My cousins and I used to walk from Ightham to Crouch, the mill was not far from Crouch, about Claygates Cross.
I had an Uncle who used to work there too.  Am not sure when it closed and would be guessing.  I am pretty sure it was still operational in the 1950's.  Hope that is of some help.  Ightham,  Crouch and Claygates Cross can be seen on most 3m to inch maps.
