I am hoping someone will be able to provide a web address to read about the Tithing of Stone in the Parish of Chew Magna -  I am intrigued by the name "Tithing of Stone"; well this is what I think it says in the 1841 Census for Philip and Sophia Parker

The Parish was divided into four enumeration districts in the 1841 Census
District 4 – The Tithing of Bishop’s Sutton
District 5 – The Tithing of Knowles and Knighton Sutton
District 6 – The Tithing of Stone
District 7 – The Tithing of North Elm
There is a description of the Tithing of Stone at http://www.origins.plus.com/census1861/chewmagna1%201861.htm
The subject of Tithes is complicated, and difficult to summarize. see http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,283543.msg3842123.html#msg3842123

Stan - much appreciated - also read another of your postings on Landed Proprietor - most informative - is it safe to assume a property on which 12 labourers and 2 boys were employed would be a reasonable concern/size???

He was a landed proprietor and farmer. It would seem a reasonable size farm, it is a pity it does not give the acreage. Philip Parker died 6th March 1859, his daughter Sophia H Adlam, married to William Adlam, in Stone,  Chew Magna, was granted letters of administration. In the 1873 return of owners of land William Adlam had  594 acres.

Thanks so much Stan - other than they were Quakers I haven't been able to find out much about Philip at all nor his parents John Parker and Elizabeth of King Grove so any snippets of information build an interesting picture!

Kind regards
