More dead ends I'm afraid. Cannot find a Robert that young. (Youngest is 4)  I looked for Rendells in uffculme -no a one and in Upottery 1 Mary aged 70. It really does sound like she may be an unwed mother the more I here....Surely when baptising the children if there was a Mr R he would have been mentioned even if he had since died  ??? Doesn't sound right to me.....or failing that as you say she just wasn't popular with her husbands...LOL

Kris

Thanks for looking through all those.  I will have to get those certificates and see what they say.

I'd better try to get some sleep - I seem to be nocturnal at the moment LOL.

Thanks for all your help

Debbie  ;)

Well Births arent them! or at least Robert isn't. I have either 2 Robert Lock's aged 9 in Upottery in 1851 or 1 enumerated at 2 addresses. The son of Robert and Fanny and a Servant aged 9 Plough Boy

Hi Kris,

I agree with you that Mary was probably unmarried.  I think the older sons might have been registered under their father's name as I know before 1850ish this happened sometimes even if the parents were unmarried.  It could explain why Samuel seems to be the only birth I could find as he is registered in his mother's name with Lock as a middle name, round about the time the law on registration of illegitimate births was tightened up.

I am going to look for Robert and William's marriages as well to see if their fathers match George's.

I'm not giving up yet!

Debbie  ;)

PS  The Lock and Rendell families seem to be very interlinked.  This is partly what led me to linking the family in 1851 with my tree.  I'm pretty certain it is my George Rendell in 1871 near where he married later that year with a James Lock living with him as a lodger.  I am starting to wonder if his father was actually a William Lock rather than Rendell.  ???

Just discovered today that Martha Mary Rendell was a widow when she married George Lock in 1854 and gave her maiden name as Burroughs.

Another name that can be spelt all ways!

Well that is something Debbie. Don't suppose she told who her father was? Looked again at Clayhiddon 41 and plenty of Burroughs etc. No Martha Of the Mary's there if a Mary Burrow 20 FS of course. Nothing likely in Uffculme. Upottery again no Martha- there is a Mary Burough 20 FS yet again. Sorry....Kris  :'(
