Deciphering three Limerick town names
« on: Thursday 04 July 13 09:56 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please help with these Limerick town names from a 1859 record? I believe the second could be a poor spelling of Murroe. Thank you.

Looks like phonetic spelling.
Perhaps the first one could be Athlacca!
Think you are correct with Murroe.
The third one looks like Carrick on -
But I don't know of anywhere in Limerick starting with Carrick on
At a push could it be Patricks Well!
The Limerick is even looking doubtful on that one.

Hello,

Could the first one be Knockea - possibly written with 'ay' sound at he end.

Sounds good Heywood,
What about Caherconlish for the last one misheard as Carrick on lask.

Yes, Sinann, that sounds very plausible.

Yes it looks like that but it is a good match phonetically for Caherconlish. The scribe might have been familiar with 'Carrick ....' but not 'Caher...'

Many thanks to everyone for the great help. I cannot tell you how much time has been wasted trying to work these out. Knockea works well for my gggrandfather, Laurence Moloney, as his sisters are reported to have come from "Balingard". Murroe was the "Native Place" of my gggrandmother, Sarah Kirby, and Kirby appears to be a common name in Murroe. The location of Caherconlish, the birthplace of their daughter, my ggrandmother, fits in well.
Thanks again
Brian
