Thank you.

I was hoping that his occupation was noted as well.

What was his cause of death?

Wonder if he was a mariner?

There is no record of his burial at the Geelong Cemetery.

You mentioned in your request that he was "married unknown".  Is that also on the certificate?

I noticed this marriage on the indexes and checked to see if it was at Geelong.

JOHNSON Andrew
THORNTON Eliza
1857  Reg#2471

A parish record on the following index.

http://zades.com.au/gandd/index.php/databases/gddbs
Record ID:   546700
JOHNSON, Andrew
THORNTON, Eliza [Spouse]

and a baptism
Record ID:   934093
JOHNSON Andrew
1858  Geelong Church register
GDHA Church Records DB
Index Title   Church Records Baptisms [Parent]

This birth is not registered on the Victorian birth index.

There is this death
and this death
JOHNSTON Mary Eliza
Father Andrew  Mother Eliza THORNTON

Looking at anything for an Eliza THORNTON I noticed these births and the last being in the Geelong district.

THORNTON William Thomas
Father Dennis  Mother Eliza
At Melbourne 1843  Reg#13437
Denomination: Church of England
Parish St James Melbourne  Fiche#274

THORNTON Rebecca
Father Dennis  Mother Eliza
At Melbourne  1845  Reg#14390
Denomination Church of England
Parish St James Melbourne  Fiche#280

THORNTON James
Father Denis  Mother Eliza
At Melbourne 1847  Reg#15263

Parish St James Melbourne  Fiche#284

THORNTON Joseph
Father Denis  Mother Eliza
At Melbourne  1850  Reg#16753

Parish St James Melbourne Fiche#294

THORNTON Joseph
Father Dennis  Mother Eliza
AT Geelong  1853  Reg#23248
Denomination Church of England
Parish Christ Church Geelong  Fiche#343

All very speculative but it may be worth purchasing the marriage certificate as it would have the bride and groom's parents details.

The Geelong Advertiser and Intelligencer Thurs 12 Apr 1853

Mrs. Thorton, a respectable woman, came before the magistrates to complain that her leige lord and husband, Dennis Thornton, was habitually ill-treating and abusing her. It appeared that since 'Thornton's return from the diggings, he had not conducted himself in that manner towards his wife and his family as formerly, but expressing this regret at past conduct and promising better, the wife interceded on his behalf for this time " for soon her heart relented towards him so late her sole delight, now at her feet, submissive in distress." But the magistrate was rather more obdurate; and required the offending swain to find his own recognizance for 'the preservation of-the peace for the next six months, in the personal sum of £50.

There is a mention of a Dennis THORNTON in
Bother Dennis and Eliza are mentioned in the book Wild and Wondrous Women 1838-1859 published in 2004 at Geelong.  Compiler Pam Jennings.  Page#69

I can't see a death registration for Dennis however civil registration didn't commence until Jul 1856.

Just found this parish record
THORNTON Dennis
BLAKELEY Eliza
1841  Reg#4409   Church of England, St James Melbourne.  Fiche#934

If this Eliza married Andrew JOHNSON I think she would be quite a bit older than Andrew.

Once again speculative research.  The marriage cert is possibly the only way forward with your hope to eliminate Andrew TAYLOR who may have married Eliza THORNTON at Geelong.  Incidentally as Andrew died in hospital the informant may have had little knowledge about him anyway.  Often the hospital messengers or porters registered the deaths.
