Hi Christina!

I think before anybody can answer your question - could you give a little more information maybe ....... ?

First of all what country was he from? What order was he with ? what denomination was he ? do you have any census info about him? and the big question -  do you know his regiment?

If you could post any info you have -  it would help with the search !!

Regards

Annie

Good evening Annie,
My grandfather Horace Norman Vincent Tonks was born
29.01.1891 in Walsall, St. Matthew, Tantarra Street
He attended the theological college in Lichfield - anglican church.
From the marriage certificate I have the following information:
1921            priest in Hull, 2 Grove Street

1926 - 1935 Vicar of St Sampson`s in York
1935 - 1936 Archdeacon of Grenada
1936 - 1949 Bishop of the Windward Islands
1949 - 1956 rector of Leybourne, Kent
1956 - 1959 rector of Castries, West Indies

My mother told me, that her father had been a priest in the army. During the war, he had been in Belgium. Unfortunately I don`t have further information

Greetings from Austria!
Christina

HI Christina!

Have you got a copy of his medal entitlement card yet?

Description Medal card of Tonks, Horace N
Corps - Church Army
Regiment No -
Rank -

Date 1914-1920
Catalogue reference WO 372/20

It cost £3.50 from the National Archives website.

I don't know how much use it will be to you though. Optimistically, it will tell you the theater of war he served in on the date he entered that theater. Then again, being in the Church Army, I don't know if they treated them the same way as the regular soldiers. His having a medal card at all, is a good indication though.

Dear Annie,
thank you for all the information. I had a look in the data bases but without success.  Unfortunately I have not got much time in the moment, I will have a closer look in the evening.

pitts.emory
I have already found this article in the internet - but thanks for the link!

census images:
I have got some census images of the Tonks family:
Mary + John Tonks in Walsall 1861/1871/1881/1891/1901
Emily + Henry Tonks in Walsall 1901
I am interested in additional images of the Tonks relatives.
