San Francisco Help Please
« on: Wednesday 10 July 13 09:22 BST (UK) »
Bridget O'Donnell born approx. 1850 in Clonmany, Co. Donegal Ireland died in San Francisco 11 Jan 1881. She resided with her husband at 33 Clarence Place , Off Townsend Street.

she married in San Francisco in approx. 1871 a John D Doherty born June 1846 approx. and died 1937 San Francisco.  They had 8 children

Trying to get death and marriage certs for Bridget, or Obit notice - anything that might indicate her parents. Same for her husband John. Thank you

It's a long shot, but I wonder if her mother's name could have been Bridget as well?
In 1880 (and prior years), there was a Peter O'Donnell living at 318 Folsom.  In 1881, Bridget O'Donnell, widow, r318 Folsom.

Were any of Bridget's and John's children named Bridget or Peter (keeping the Irish naming pattern in mind)?

Are you quite sure they were married in San Francisco?  Is there a chance that they were married elsewhere and moved to San Francisco around that time?

From the internment register of Calvary Cemetery, San Francisco :
Dougherty, Bridget ,  nativity Ireland, married, occupation wife John, residence 33 Clarence, parish St. Rose, cause of death Consumption, died 1881 Jan 11, age 30 yrs, interred in Dor. 5, Sta. 76, Area 9, Grave 7.8, Burial $8 Paid, Purchaser John Dougherty, purchased Sep 23, 1876, remarks 29673
LINK:  http://www.sfgenealogy.com/php/holycross/view.php#indexed
(after clicking on Jan 1881, go to page 918, Bridget is near bottom of page)

~1940 the graves of Calvary Cemetery were removed to Holy Cross Cemetery in nearby Colma.   Here is the record of removal for Bridget Dougherty’s grave :

San Francisco civil records were destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, so if no obituary, then you may want to try records of St. Rose Church which was located close by Clarence Place.  St. Rose survived 1906, but was demolished after the 1989 earthquake.  Here’s link for the Archives of San Francisco Diocese.  I don’t know if they do lookups, but with your specific details, it’s worth a try for Bridget & John’s marriage and death records.

If you have not already done so, if you enter John's burial information into
http://www.sfgenealogy.com/php/cemetery/cemeteryindex.php
Burial location: Sec B, Row 18, Area 39
several Doherty results will show up: Bridget, Edw, Frances A, John, John F, John J, and Patrick J.
There are also the following last names: Cameron, Swett and Wood with the same section, row and area number.

My husband's ancestor is buried in the same section that John Doherty is buried.  If I only type in the ancestor's section, row and area numbers (not including his grave number), there are about 20 results.  My husband's ancestor is buried with his wife.  The rest of the results are those buried in neighbouring graves.  Using this theory, the Dohertys shown in the above referenced site should be buried in a neighbouring grave of (if not right next to) John Doherty.

It would have been helpful to have a Grave Number, as that might tell you if anyone is buried in the same plot.

Found on a newspaper website, is the death of Patrick J. Doherty, son of John and the late Bridget Doherty.

In addition to the Doherty's mentioned previously, Jennie Swett, daughter of John Doherty, died May 25, 1908.  Also mentioned:  "...sister of James Doherty, Mrs. F. Wood and the late Patrick Doherty."

I called the cemetery office.  A John Doherty bought several grave sites in 1895.  There are several Woods, Doherty's, and a Sweet/Swett and Petersen buried in the graves.  If you would like the details, I can send them by private message.

If you are interested in viewing the cemetery, using one of the internet maps, I believe I may be able to advise roughly where the headstones are located.
