Stensland Family

According to the USA 1910 Census: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MKZN-JD6 there is a Thos Gobern living with Thomas Stensland as his nephew. I believe this to be Tobias Goxem.

Tobias is the son of Christen Knudsen Goxem and Nicoline Tomine Tobiasdatter. Nicoline is Aanen’s sister and she is present in the 1865 Census above.

Also, according to this from the 1910 Census  http://xml.arkivverket.no/folketellinger/hefter/1910/10Vest-Agder/f9101002_hefte.pdf  page 65, Tobias Goxem was living in Chicago in 1910.

So, Thos. Gobern (Tobias Goxem) is Thomas Stenland’s nephew.

My handicap is that I know absolutely no Norwegian or Swedish…  Also not accustomed to how the names are used…  For example:  How would I know that Thomas Stensland and Aanen Tobiassen are the same person.

I have a professional photo of her and on the back it lists her name as Sophia.

I do believe that Aanen is Thomas. His surname is Stensland, the name of the place he was born. Also the date of birth is the same as on his death record. The surname Goxem also being a place name and being related too.
The christian name Thomas is intriguing though.
I'll see if I can find anything else tomorrow.

Here is his passenger record from Norway to USA as Aanen Stensland. He is noted as a seaman: http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/gen/vis/8/pe00000000266814

He must have changed his christian name sometime on the way to Chicago. Perhaps Aanen was too difficult in English.

I have found your Emma Sofia although she was not born in Eskilstuna but was born 16 Oct 1854. She was born in Almesåkra Parish in Småland. Her parents were Peter Petersson and Anna Gustafsdotter. Anna died in 1869 and Peter remarried in 1873. The records show that most of the children left around this time including Emma Sofia, she left home in 1873.
I then find her in Höreda Parish when she is recorded as leaving for America on 23 March 1882. According to the emigration records she was travelling to Chicago alone.
