Korea March 1952
« on: Thursday 11 July 13 20:15 BST (UK) »
Hi All....

I am looking for pointers on a casualty from the Korean war.
Lance Corp Norman S Smith died Monday 3 March 1952 and is buried in Pusan/ Busan in the United Nations Memorial Cemetery plot 22 row pos 11 grave serial 1406.

His brother is our now elderly neighbour and whilst chatting in his garden the other day I told him all about my sons project to detail the lives of the boys from our village who are on the war memorial. It only contains WW1 roll of honour and the 3 boys who died on service.
My neighbour said it was always their late mothers wish to see some mention of Norman but at the time no-one seemed interested.
So before I start to ring and make myself annoying.... what's the best way to do this?
Who should I approach... Parish Clerk? the church? Royal British Legion? Local paper?
Any ideas please as I have never tackled anything like this but feel Norman needs to have some one fighting for him now.

Tazzie find out who owns the memorial it maybe local authority?
Then id get in touch with the British Legion and parish council
Its a tough one to see if anything can be added but with the centenary of WW1 coming up there maybe interest to see the memorial renovated
We had a number of post WW2 names added to our local memorial a few years ago....

Hi Ady

Thank you for for the tip. The memorial in the village is in good condition and we even wondered about a memorial stone within the church yard.
My neighbour has a now faded photo of his brothers grave and also the memorial certificate sent to their parents.
There is a service on 27 July to commemorate the fallen and those who served at the National Arboretum.

Cheers

Just a thought but the Next Of Kin maybe eligible to claim the Elizabeth Cross.....its awarded to families of those killed post WW2 on military operations.

Hi

Just found a site called war memorials archive and it list the memorial as being owned by the parish council it had work done in 1993.
I will tell him about the Elizabeth cross the scroll must be what my neighbour has framed and see about making an application.
Have just googled it so off to have a read.
