Sweeny family Cork early 1800s.
« on: Friday 12 July 13 09:34 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information about Mary Jane Sweeny, born around the mid 1820s in Cork, daughter of William and Mary Jane. I am wondering where in Cork the family was from, and when she maried Thomas Brooks. Their oldest child was born around 1850, and Brooks was in the 65th regiment. They went to New Zealand. If it were possible to find out anything about her parents as well, that would be a bonus.

There is a marriage for a Thomas Brooks & Mary Sweeney on 11th Feb 1844 in the
Roman Catholic parish of Schull East.   Schull is in West Cork on the Irish genealogy site

See

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/c3dc660043958

For an actual view of the record book see

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/reels/cork%20%26%20ross.east%20schull.p4804.00671.pdf

There are three children recorded for this couple ,
John  16 Nov 1844,
Ellen 26 Jan  1846
Elizabeth 18 Mar 1847

Do any of these names tie in with the names you have ?

This record may or may not be them but a possibility

If you have trouble with above links, go into www.irishgenealogy.ie and go into search church records

Hi Mary,
Thanks for the information. It is a possibility. I only know the name of one child who was born in 1855. At the time of Mary Jane's death in 1890, the oldest living child was a male born around 1850. But that is not to say that older children were not already deceased.

As you already know that Thomas Brooks was in the 65th Regiment, have you got his
records?   It should have details of his home place, also the various places he was stationed.

The other option you could look at is any New Zealand census that might tell you how many
years Thomas & Mary were married at the time of the census.   This might give you an
idea of what year they married although not always reliable.

As they were both born before civil registration of births began in 1864 it is too early for civil records.     Civil marriages began in 1845.   Have a look at family search.org to see if any
records for them there.  No marriage records for a Thomas Brooks on it.

Thanks for the idea of looking at a census. I am not sure when the earliest ones were, but I know Thomas Brooks died in 1865, so it may be too early, but I will give that a go. The 65th regiment inormation comes from "Discharged in New Zealand". His records will be in the archives in Wellington. Unfortunately, not likely to have an opportunity to go to Wellington any time soon... :'(

Hi George,

Dry those tears .... :)  Start a new thread on our Board asking for an Archives look up.  Might have to wait a while as our looker upper (Spades) is away overseas at the moment, but I am sure someone else will go and have a gander for you.
