World War Two - 162nd Regiment of RAC
« on: Tuesday 16 July 13 02:21 BST (UK) »
My Uncle was in the 162nd Regiment RAC, which was formed from The Buffs (West Kent) in 1942 - I have a photo of him in Belgium in late 1944 but nothing else - does anyone have any other information about the 162nd during WWII?

Hi,
There seems to be a paucity of information on this bunch. The only reference I can find is that they were original members of 79th Armoured Division (as Divisional troops, not part of a regular  Brigade) and upon the start of its specialised role for NW Europe, 162 Regiment R.A.C. disappear from view. Maybe they amalgamated with another regiment, but I could find no more I'm afraid.

Files WO 166/6954 & 11123 at The National Archives Indicate the Regiment only existed from September 1942 to June 1943.

Should you want any copies just contact the address sent in my P.M.

It had a short life:

10 September 1942 move to Pontefract to join 79th Armoured Division
8 April 1943 Transfer to 9th Armoured Division.
May 1943 Regiment has 54 Armoured Cars, 43 Scout Cars and 82 Motorcycles.
June 1943 notification that Regiment is to disband, draft of 350 Other Ranks transferred to various Regiments of the Reconnaissance Corps.
