Was Moses Nutt married 3 times?
« on: Saturday 27 July 13 08:52 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I think that Moses Nutt was married three times but would appreciate if someone could have a look at the following, thanks.

Moses Nutt bc1829 Ripon (baptism not found) to parents Moses & Elizabeth Nutt as shown on C1841.

In 1851 he married Jane Turner - GRO Q2 23/766 York and C1851 piece 2353, folio 389 page 3 shows him married but wife not shown with him?

C1861 unable to locate Moses & Jane (nor their subsequent children)

C1871 Moses & Jane (aged 44) and children Martha M (Matilda) 17, and Moses H (Henry) aged 12. piece 4745 folio 23 page 18.

1878 - A Jane Nutt dies Q2 9d/5 York aged 55 years

1880 - Marriage of a Moses Nutt to a Hannah Wormersley Q2/1880 9d/100 York and it would seem that Hannah died Q3/1880 9d/8 York, aged 36 as in ....

C1881 - Moses shown as a widower, living with daughters Elizabeth (born 1852) and Matilda (Martha) piece 4718, folio 27 page 4

C1891 - Moses with wife Annie (unable to find marriage registration) and their children Frederick Arthur aged 7 and Charles Ernest 5. piece 3888 folio 82 page 24.

1905 Moses dies aged 76 years Q1/1905 9d/22 York

C1911 - Annie Moses, shown as widow, aged 50 with sons Frederick (Arthur) 27, Charles (Ernest) 25, Walter 19 and Percy (Parkinson) 16.

1919 - An Annie Moses passes away in 1919 aged 60 years York Q3, 9d/27

So, what I would like to find out is
- where is Jane Nutt nee Turner in 1851
- where are Moses & Jane in 1861
- when did Moses married Annie ?  possibly her maiden name Parkinson?

Many thank for any help Bonnie
PS Just to let you know, I have full information on all of Moses's children, their births, marriages and deaths

Bonnie,

It is possible that Moses and Jane were living in Leeds, West Yorkshire in 1861 (although I have been unable to locate them in the 1861 census.)

The reason why I say this is I noticed that their daughter Martha (Matilda) was born in Leeds in 1854.  I have located the possible burials of two of Moses and Jane's children which took place at Leeds General Cemetery (Woodhouse) in 1855 and 1857.  Here are the details.

Grave Number 860
2nd September 1855 burial of Moses Nutt aged 8 months.  Died 28th August 1855.  Cause of death Dysentery.  Birth place Leeds.  Abode Carlton Place, Leeds.  Parents names Moses and Jane Nutt.  Fathers occupation Saddler. Informants signature Moses Nutt.

Grave Number 809
5th September 1857 burial of Annie Maria Nutt aged 6 weeks.  Died 2nd September 1857.  Cause of death Diarrhoea.  Birth place Leeds.  Abode Upper North Street, Leeds.  Parents names Moses and Jane Nutt.  Fathers occupation Saddler.  Informants signature Moses Nutt.

I know that this information does not answer any of your original questions but I thought that I would post the information for you just in case you didn't already have it and I also thought that the addresses which Moses and Jane were living at in 1855 and 1857 might narrow down your search if they were still living in Leeds in 1861.

I hope that this information is of use to you and if I can be of any further help, please just ask.

Best Wishes

Hello CJL - Thanks your response.
I did know that Moses and Jane had a son Moses 1854-1855 but didn't know they also had a daughter Annie Marie who died at 6 weeks - how terrible sad for them.

I had trawl on C1861 looking for them in the Leeds area but so far no joy.

I am pretty sure that he married again in 1880 to 2nd wife Hannah, who died the same year - a pity there isn't a parish record on line of their nuptials.  Also mystery nothing comes up on FreeBDM with a marriage registration to Annie

Thanks for your very detailed response, it is much appreciated.  Bonnie

Hi
Could this be Jane 1851?
Ripon Westgate
Jane Turner 24 draper's daughter Ripon
Elizabeth 22 draper's daughter Ripon.
Jane has had her relationship to the head of the household crossed through and altered to Head.
It seems Miriam Turner age 50 draper on the 1841 census has just died and the daughters are sorting out the household.Could her sudden death have overshadowed the marriage and led to a slightly odd 1851 entry?
Ciderdrinker
ps Turns out Miriam Turner 61 widowed draper Grantley Yorks is visiting elsewhere Bridge Hewick the Christopher Hebden 68 widowed farmer and his family.

Hi everyone,

I wonder whether this might help if the family were in the Leeds area in 1861 :

~~~~~~~~~~
http://www.findmypast.co.uk/help-and-advice/knowledge-base/census/known-issues#3
Missing pieces of the 1861 census
There are a number of enumeration books missing, or parts of enumeration books (usually missing start or finish), from the 1861 census. Below is a list of the books affected that we know of, both those missing in their entirety (M) and those which are incomplete (I) in the National Archives.
3388    West Yorkshire    Leeds    West Leeds (3)    Leeds NW Ward    M
~~~~~~~~~~

The (M) would mean the books were missing in their entirety.

Kind regards,

Pels.

when did Moses married Annie ?  possibly her maiden name Parkinson?

I have full information on all of Moses's children, their births, marriages and deaths

Do you have any of their birth certificates to confirm both mother's maiden names?

The last child of Moses & Annie appears to be Percy P Nutt born 1895 here's his birth entry

Percy Parkinson Nutt   Apr-May-Jun 1895 York Volume:   9d page 16

obtaining this may be the only way of finding out his mother Annie's maiden name
unfortunately Yorkshire BMD doesn't give it  ???

This is the only christening I have found
Charles Ernest Nutt Birth Date:   6 Dec 1885 Christening Date:   30 Jan 1886 York
Father's Name:   Moses Nutt Mother's Name:   Annie

I can't see a marriage for a Moses to an Annie after 1880 and the only two that appear on
Yorkshire BMD are

1851 St Clement Bishophill Senior York to Jane TURNER

1880 York District Marriages, York to Hannah WORMERSELY

The name Hannah has many variants: Ann, Anna, Anne, Annie etc… from the censuses
1891/01/11 Annie's pob given as Featherstone dates vary born c1853/59/61

You mention Moses is widowed on the 1881 census which would suggest another marriage to an Annie - perhaps Moses & Annie were just living together as man & wife and never married  ???

1901c Moses & Annie children Frederick A, Charles, Walter & Percy R  (1895)
surname transcribed as RUTT
RG13; Piece: 4441; Folio: 117; Page: 12

I think Pels must be right about the 1861 census as Nutt family nowhere to be found  ???

Hello All ... many thanks your responses

Ladyhawk  No, I don't have any birth certificates of the children born to Moses and Annie and as you suggested, the way to go is to buy one of these to ascertain the maiden name of the mother.   Thanks also C1901, I haven't found that.

PELS  Thanks info on C1861

Ciderdrinker  Thanks info on Jane Turner C1851.  See on C1841 Miriam and daughters Jane and Elizabeth shown in Ripon

I was told that Moses Nutt married Jane Turner at St Marys Bishophill Senior Church York on 03 May 1851 and he married Hannah Wormersley 17 May 1880 at The Lendal Chapel York though I wasn't given nor have sighted a copy of the actually marriage certificates.

It could well be that Hannah was known as Annie and the death of a Hannah Nutt in 1880 is not her.
At the York Cemetery there are 20 Nutts listed as being buried there. I have found in the past that the volunteers are very helpful in searching records though the problem for me is transferring funds (extremely expensive) from here to there to obtain details.

Thanks once again ... it is actually Moses sister Martha who is my ancestor but became curious about him - what a name MOSES NUTT!
Regards Bonnie

Hello
I have just joined rootschat and that you are interested in the Nutt family( of York ) family tree. My grandmother was Daisy Augusta Nutt . She died in 1966. Her parents were Moses Nutt and Matilda Jane Nutt. She was born in South Africa.
Did you know that Moses Nutt , born 1758 was a "foundling", left at the Foundling Hospital in London.
He was apprenticed to a farmer in Yorkshire when he was 10.
If you want more information, I am happy to help. I do have two photographs of "Moses 3" and various Nutt certificates.

Hello Verainkent, welcome to Rootschat and thanks for making contact.

I was in contact (not on this site), about 4 years ago, with another descendant of Moses NUTT bc1758 d 1840 and she kindly gave me all the information about the Foundling hospital, Moses apprenticeship to farmer, James Clarke, etc.,

His son, MOSES NUTT bc1796 d1868 married ELIZABETH TEBB 1824.  I descend from their daughter MARTHA NUTT bc1824 d1896 being my 2xggm.  She married a JOHN COOK and their daughter MARTHA b1857 d1955 was my great grandmother.

For us to exchange PM's (private messages) on this site, you will need to do two (2) more postings.

Look forward to hearing from you soon
