Help looking for Thomas Sullivan

I am trying to find a Thomas Sullivan and his wife Ellen Rowan.
Thomas and Ellen married on April 22 1856 in York. Both aged 19,
They had a daughter Margaret on the 8th March 1857 she died in 1862.
They also had a daughter Julia i think she may have been born overseas as Thomas was a soldier in the 3rd buffs(i think). Julia died in 1869 in York.
I can never find Thomas and Ellen on a census together. I have Ellen in 1861 in York and 1871 in York.
In 1871 she has another daughter Jane born in York.
Then i cannot find any of them again.Only Jane when she marries in 1891.
Any help would be appreciated.

You have not included any info on Jane or Thomas's birthplaces

When was daughter Jane born - presumably sometime between the 1861-1871 census

Sorry about that. I don't know where Thomas was born because i cannot find them together on any census.
Jane was born on the 5 June 1870 in the Union Workhouse Clifton Yorkshire.
 Ellen and Jane are on the 1871 census in the Workhouse.
It says that Ellen is a soldiers wife and she was born in Ireland.
I also know that Ellen's father was called Anthony Rowan and Thomas father was called Thomas Sullivan

It's difficult because from what I can see Ellen isn't always consistent with her age, Reedy ?

Ellen's year of birth according to her marriage : 1837

But, from the census return's :

1861 census - age 28 (1833)      1871 census - age 41 (1830)

The reason I mentioned the above, I wondered whether you'd noticed this one in 1901 :

It would give her a birth year of 1840, which is nearer to her marital age than the 1871 census claimed her age was.

Thanks I did notice that in 1901.
I also have a death certificate for Ellen Sullivan on the 24th January 1910 died in the union workhouse York aged 71 but no more information on it.

I wonder where Ellen and Jane where in 1881 and 1891. Maybe not in the country

Hello,

the child Julia's age is '0' at the time of death in 1869 but there is no birth registration for her. It may be that she died before she could be registered. It may be worth looking at the certificate.
There is a family- Michael and Elizabeth Sullivan having children at the same time but they have a son Thomas in 1869.
