Freedman family from Kalwaria Poland to Wales
« on: Sunday 28 July 13 22:46 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a family called FREEDMAN who came from Kalwaria Poland to Merthyr Tydfil, Wales . In 1851 Solomon and Sarah Freedman are in Merthyr with their children. The first two were born in Poland,  Ann b 1836 and Mary Ann B 1841. The next child Adelaide was born in 1846 in Merthyr so the family must have come to Wales between 1841 and 1846 . Solomon Freedman was a Pawnbroker. Does anyone know of Polish Jewish  records which show Solomon and Sarah's marriage  or the baptisms?  Solomon's father Sampson Freedman b 1795 is also shown as coming from Poland . He also shows in the UK records.

Does anyone know why would the family have travelled from Poland to Wales at that time?

Thank you

bellou  :) :)

hi bellou
not a direct answer for you but doing a google search for jews in wales it appears that in that era lots moved into wales because of the economic growth then also the first synagogue was opened in Merthyr in 1876 so where were they holding services before then ? .
a guess as to why they left Poland would be religious persecution an age old problem for jews I,m afraid .

Hello Bellou.

Did you find out any more about the Freedman family? Solomon Freedman was my Great great great Grandfather! I have been to his grave (and about 30 other Freedman's graves) in the old Jewish Cemetry in Merthyr. I would love to know anything you have managed to discover about the family; all I know is that Solomon was a Pawnbroker and lived in Merthyr. I know nothing about his parents or his wife.

Hi

Solomon Freedman from Kalwaria is my Great-Great-Great Grandfather.  Born 1817, he died in Jerusalem in 1901.  He and Sarah had 10 children (his son Maurice was my ancestor). I'm afraid I have no further information regarding marriage date or of his father, Samson.

I'm fascinated by your visit to the Freedman graves!

if I find any further information I will post it.

Regards
David (daarons@gmail.com)

Hi David

OK, now I am even more confused! If Solomon Freedman died in Jerusalem how come I have been to his grave in Merthyr??? ??? We must be talking about the same man, as the rest of the info you gave matches what I have. So where does the Jerusalem info come from?

Befuddled!
