Awarua Radio ZLB opened on 18 December 1913 and closed on 30 August 1991.

Originally known as VLB, Awarua Radio was a Government (NZ Post & Telegraph) Telecommunications Station, located between Invercargill and Bluff on the South Island of New Zealand.

It was one of a chain of similar stations throughout New Zealand including ZLD Auckland, ZLW Wellington and ZLC Chatham Islands.  All were closed in 1990s, leaving Taupo Maritime Radio ZLM as New Zealand’s only marine radio station.

Awarua ZLB first transmitted a radio signal on the 18th December 1913,  100 years ago. A weekend of celebrations is been planned from Friday the 17th January until Sunday the 19th January 2014 to mark the occaision.

Any contributions of photographs, memorabilia or expressions of interest would be most welcome and appreciated.

In anticipation thank you.
