1930's group photo East Malvern, Melbourne, Victoria
« on: Tuesday 30 July 13 22:06 BST (UK) »
I put this on the Photographic page asking for any help - suggested I try here but not sure how to transfer it properly, so will go ahead on this page.

My grandmother is the lady with the red ink dot and I think the young lad is my Dad.  I think this group was my grandmother's card-playing group with others.

Likely taken in the East Malvern area of Melbourne c 1930.

Grandma's name was Blanche W Kemp (nee Perkins) and the young lad could be Reginald G Kemp at about 10years of age.  I would love to know if anyone recognises or knows the identity of the other people.

Regards,
jk22

Hi JK22, I think you are drawing a very long bow here. However, somethings you may have already noted. The photo is not actually on this post, makes it very hard to check! Also if you really want to know who these people are, your best bet is living relatives or friends, very doubtful given the time frame.

Not all is is lost however. YOU NEED TO READJUST YOUR POST! Change the heading from 1930's group to the name in Capitals. This would give any likely lookers at least some idea of what family.

IE: The family of Blanche W KEMP in 1930's East Malvern photo. (Can you identify people) ?

When people look up the site or google that name it may come up on a wild card search so you never know someone may know the name and reply. ;D

You do need to reattach the photo though. Always use capitals for surnames.

I've had some success placing an old photo in a local newspaper - although in my case it was in Scotland.

Maybe the Stonnington Leader would be interested in doing a little feature?

Hi jk22,
The Stonnington Council also has a History Centre which may ?? be able to help. It covers all sorts of things from house dating, WW2 letters and their own range of photos.
I know other History Society's become almost familiar with faces, so it may be worth trying them and/or giving them a copy which other people may add names to.

Also if you have a look at the Family History Week posting - go to the link and look under Victoria the City of Boroondara is having a session at the end of August- on Dating photos and asking people to bring photos from the area. Are you sure it is East Malvern and not a bit further North - say Glen Iris?????
Cheers

Thanks awfully for the great response.
My grandparents 'built' the house at 66 Brunel Street, East Malvern circa 1925-30.  My late Father had deep feelings for his youth spent there and all the people he met via his parents activities - many of whom were notable public figures when he was a boy and some became so later in the middle of the century.
Cando:  you are an amazing operative for Rootschat.
I will follow up on your clue 'neb' re the newspaper.
Have added the photo:  my Grandmother is the lady with the red ink dot!  Dad is seated in front of her.  Any ideas regarding the other people with them?!
Again,
thanks so much.

Hi jk22,

I still think if you had the time the Boroondara photo session is another good option, given the location of Brunel St. It is on the cusp of both Stonnington and Boroondara councils. Boroondara now takes in Camberwell, Glen Iris and Ashburton as well Kew and Hawthorn.

Members of the card group could have come from surrounding suburbs that they met at other social groups like church or sporting groups. Or even have relatives who have settled in the surrounding suburbs.

I would offer to take a copy of the photo for you but at this stage I may have a clash of appointments :(

Thanks Mablejessie for your reply and suggestions.
I've tried to place an ad in the Stonnington Leader but can't get it sorted on their website - my ad doesn't seem to fit their given criteria - ie not announcements, public notices and tenders for example.  I will try once more!
