« on: Friday 02 August 13 03:06 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Anyone know the history of Lomas Street, Stockport around 1911. A large number of people lived at 16 Lomas St. and I'm trying to figure out what was there....workhouse etc. Thanks

Looking at the Old Maps site http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html  the 1910 and 1895 maps both show Lomas Street with housing rather than larger institutions such as a workhouse

Kay

Edit Stockport Council has some photos of the street with others - they are alphabetical

What information does the 1911 give regarding the residents of number 16.  The form should also give the number of rooms in the property

Hi,

thanks Kate99, just new at this, and I hadn't discovered either website, oldmapsuk or stockportcouncil. Thanks for those. Yep, you're right looks just like housing, and some good photos at stockport council confirms that.  :)

Hi Rosie99 and stanmapstone,

I've got the Albert Seddon family of 8 in 4 rooms, and the Harry Swift family of 10 in 4 rooms both at 16 Lomas Street. I don't understand either stan. An error in house numbers? :-\

Suggest you check the enumerator's list and the address page in case Harry Swift's household schedule is confusing about his correct address in Lomas St.  Check also the signature details for his return.

I have sent you a PM.

Did you note that Albert SEDDON signed for Harry SWIFT? Maybe the latter could not write!

Checking the returns there is no entry for no 14!

The enumerator was May HUNT from no 5

Majority of the housing is 2 up 2 down probably built post 1901

As Albert filled in the return for Harry he had to use his own address on it.
If you look at the enumerators schedule page for Harry you will see that he lived at 7 Lomas Street.
Not sure if you're interested in the street or the family, if the family then these two were brothers in law. Harry Swift married Mary Carson and Albert Seddon married Elizabeth Carson.
