1904 building site - where is this?
« on: Friday 02 August 13 18:13 BST (UK) »
Can anyone identify the place in this photo?
My Great grandad sent this photo back to the UK. He left to go and work on this project. We don't know what his name was but we know he was a building contractor. I am hoping that if I can identify where he was it might help me find his name.

Where is this place? The photo is dated 30.4.1904 and has 44 written underneath the date
Wadkins (Middlesex), Hankin (Midldlesex) Clews (Cheshire), Walters (Cumberland) Irons (Ireland) Doorley(Dawley) Ireland,
Fletcher (Cheshire/Lancashire) King (Newark Notts) Pickering (Cheshire)

That's the link to the fantastic free to search website for the National Library of Australia's DIGITISED newspapers  :)   Perhaps looking through 1904 newspapers may give you some idea of what was happening in various locations Australia around then.

Your post has actually landed itself slightly OFF track, and I think it will get more notice on the main Australian Board so I will ask a Moderator to move it.

I wonder if the Photo board at RChat could enhance the background details a tad?  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?board=298.0

This link is to your thread with another great photo  :) http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=656083.0

This is wildly speculative but:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swanbourne_Hospital

Australia like many countries was emerging from the depression of the 1890's so many new building projects were being undertaken and without any idea of where it would be an impossible task to nail down a particular site. To add to this no one is alive from that period to give some firsthand knowledge about projects.
Sorry

Ummm .... could be that one ..... on other hand, it could be that the smelting works at Mount Morgan, Queensland,  were subject to expansion circa 1905-1913 ish ....  but that's thousands of miles from Swanbourne Hospital ....

It could be anywhere .....
