James Niland aged 17 can be found on the 1881 in Usworth with father Patrick plus siblings

1891 - James Nyland aged 22 b Wolverhampton is living with his brother in Lamesley.  He is shown as single

So they both started a new family. James and Maria must have been together for such a small amount of time and then separated but stayed married for all those years.
