help finding my elusive gt grandfather missing years Bolton area or abroad

hi ive not been able to find my gr grandfather on the 1861  census

story so far

birth 1846 william roscow(e) scowcroft son of mary nee Roscowe and samuel Scowcroft

on the 1851 hes living with uncle lawrence Roscow and aunt Ellen Roscow

in 1861 hes missing - both uncle and aunt have got married by then - lawrence is on his own just him and wife so hes not there -
aunt ellens marriage

now i cannot find this couple on the 1861 either !!! so maye they are all togehter ??

everything is nice and dandy after 1870 as he get married and 1871, onwards hes traceable with wife but becasue he has the double barrelled name its casued havoc trying to find him

im wonerinf if he travelled with aunt and uncle and maybe they moved on as i cant find anything for the Horsefield couple at all - maybe im missing something but any help appreciated - he did travel to Amercia a lot later in life and they had servants but i cannot find the Horsfileds having any children been looking for a whle any help apprecaite

just thought i would add -Ellens birth place is Haslindgen - not sure about Johns thought could be Bolton

I haven't found your William Scowcroft yet, bur I think this is his aunt Ellen in 1861....

I don't know if you have Williams's marr cert but here's  link to it. It mentions that one of the witnesses was LOUISA SCOWCROFT. Maybe try and find her? ;

oh yes - i do have a few  louisa scowcrofts  in the tree and one is his siter his sister  i suppose he could be anywhere - but i was thinking maybe abroad i ahve been looking for it for over a year tried a few different thing but cant find

Here in 1861 is SAMUEL and MARY, no sign of William BUT THERE IS A LAWRENCE AND A LOUISA. Is this the correct family?

thanks ill have a look - thanks for the info on the horsfileds ive just got sidetracked as i found something on williams grandfather Baxter which was very interesting as i was looking at this and  i have now got sidetracked

thanks Jennie - how do i find more info on that?  he would have been 16 - obvioulsy there are several william Scowcrofts around but only one william roscoe - he was obviously away for a few years doing something maybe your on the right track with that - how can find more on it ?
