Lemasonry or Lomasney lookup

Hi,
    I've been researching my family name of Lemasonry for a while now and can only reliably trace back to 1855 when my g-grandfather joined the 68th of Foot in Fermoy in the February of that year. (full explanation go to www.aureum.co.uk) As explained in the website, before that we can only surmise the results, and we assume that he was the one responsible for originating our name by changing it from Lomasney. (or Lemasney) What I'd like to know for sure is am I right in my assumptions or do I have a lot more to find out?
