thanks Giblet - with these tid bits I think we have worked out the children just need to purchase a couple of certificates and it should all fall nicely into place.

I agree , it could well be.
BUT the only hint I have so far found as to  second given name for the  THOMAS MCCANN (our interest) is this birth which gives an initial

REG 13780 In 1862 MCCANN THOMAS P
Father THOMAS J
Mother MARY
At TAMWORTH

Sparret this is the only time I have seen the intial J used but in my notes I have found some children's names Charles J , JOhn J and a John Charles McCANN, up until today I haven't been able to know which of these children are their's (i had a list of 10 children all with Thomas and Mary as parents) I recently received a email listing the other family. AND with purchasing some of these certificates will let me know if they are mine.
Hope it makes sense.

the Thomas Patrick mentioned in the newspaper article is the first child of Thomas and Mary b 1862 so I will definately obtain a certificate for him.
