An afterthought on that last statement, maybe he was a warder in New York?

Sorry about all these thoughts as they occur - we only have one Robert Farrell entering Australia between 1839 - and 1896 and he is married, aged 42 and has a family of about 6 kids.   So where to go from here.   Another thought being that he was a paying passenger.....

There is a library that does free look-ups in New York state death records.  Information about making a request is available here - http://www.unyg.com/blog/index.php/2008/03/new-york-state-vital-records-microfiche-indexes-update/

Thank you so much for the link you sent, I have emailed the library and hope that the lady concerned is still working there or that someone else has taken on the project.  Will let you know.

I have since found a shipping list for a ship called the Star of the West which came to Sydney in 1877 and there was a Robert Farrell as a passenger but no personal details, as he married supposedly in 1878 this information is looking good.   We keep on plodding along.
