John Caldwell BROWN's birth 1833 Irvine

I'm researching the Brown Family. My starting point is Jane Frances Crawford BROWN the daughter of John Caldwell BROWN and Johanna Frederika Wilhelmina WILL who married Robert TANNOCK in Liverpool in 1899.

I've found John Caldwell BROWN on various censuses:
1901 in Waterloo, Liverpool, Lancashire - Commission Agent/Merchant
1891 in Irvine, Ayrshire - West India Merchant
1881 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire  - West India Merchant
1871 in Irvine, Ayrshire - West India Merchant

On each one he states he was born in 1833 in Irvine, but I haven't been able to find his birth/baptism yet.

Can anyone help?

Hi,

You have a Herculean task researching Browns - I know having Ayrshire Browns myself (no relation to your John Caldwell Brown, I'm quite sure!).
Do you know when and where John and Johanna Will marry?
They appear to have had at least 4 children in Scotland, did they marry in Scotland?

Found this birth which might be of interest -

This John Brown is born to a John Brown and Grace Caldwell at West Kilbride (about 15 miles from Irvine). This caught my eye as his parents marry 1830 . Marriage details appear on Familysearch both at West Kilbride and Irvine. The banns must have been read at both places.

This family are living in West Kilbride on the 1851 Census. Father John Brown is a Blacksmith & Grocer employing 2 men. Place of birth for him and Grace is Irvine.
Son John aged 16 is a apprentice blacksmith place of birth West Kilbride .
There are 9 other children. I found them on the Freecen website.

Of course this might not be John Caldwell Brown. Just thought I'd draw this John to your attention.

I haven't found John Caldwell BROWN and Johanna WILL's marriage yet. I think they got married in Cuba. John seems to be a West India Merchant trading in tobacco. Alex their first son was born in Havana.

Wow, Irvine to Cuba! Amazing.

Have you looked at the birth certs of the children born in Scotland. Scottish birth certificates usually have the place and date of the parents marriage recorded. Also where did John die? If he died in Scotland his death certificate should have his parents names recorded.

Sadly, John died in Waterloo, Liverpool in 1907.

I'll get one of the children's birth certificates.

I had a funny feeling that John would have died in England.

You do know that you don't need to order one of the children's certificates. £7 buys 30 credits on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk . 6 credits will allow you to view online. Just be sure you have the right Jane Frances Crawford Brown for example before you view . Otherwise you could spend a lot of money! She was born in Irvine, 23 Mar 1871
There is also Rudolph John Brown born 21 Sep 1874 Irvine
John Caldwell Brown born 11 Oct 1868 Anderston Glasgow
Eugenie Will Brown born 9 Jul 1864 Irvine.

This has been submitted to that website by someone but there does not seem to be any evidence to back it up. So this is not reliable, but perhaps gives you something else to investigate.

Could John be from a seafaring family and have been sent to sea at a young age?

Just looked at Jane Frances Crawford Brown's birth.

John Caldwell BROWN and Johanna WILL got married on the 3 January 1858 in Havana Cuba.
