James and Jane 1871/1872
« on: Saturday 10 August 13 04:41 BST (UK) »
I received this photo this morning by email from a distant cousin.   It is of my Great grandparents James Currie Draffan and his 'intended' Jane Robson.    Since they did get married on 6th July, 1872 at Blackhill, Consett then I think this must have been taken either early 1872 or possibly 1871.

James sent it to his brother George Draffan the grandfather of the cousin who has just sent it on to me.

James was born in Lesmahagow, Scotland in 1846 and Jane at Healey Cote Northumberland in 1850 so she was barely 20 years old in this photo.   Sadly she died in childbirth in 1883.

I wonder if you kind people can enhance it for us but more so for their memories.

       Many thanks, Malcolm

The second photo on this page - http://vintagek2.com/heritage/cdv/cdvuk/b/bannister.html seems to have the same 'Grecian?' furniture and foot stool, but the figure on the furniture may be different and the photographer's address in Newcastle is different.    Maybe they moved.

Oh very nice....just for your interest, while the coloured line around the photo was an 1870s feature, I don't think I've seen a green one before. Unusual :)

Cheers,

Thank you Tommy, you have made the figure on the Grecian furniture clearer and it does look different from the photo that is on the Bannister Photo Studio page.   This one looks like a goddess on the sideboard, whilst the one in the Studio taken in the mid 1860's at a different address looks more like a male figure, i.e. the piece attached now.

I think that when they moved the studio from Ridley Street to Derwent Street they turned the sideboard around.

That is interesting China.    Never really noticed the coloured lines around these old photos before.
