hastings union workhouse death 1911
« on: Tuesday 13 August 13 12:50 BST (UK) »
hi i wondered if there might be a preferred cemetery for the workhouse in frederick rd?  The workhouse website says east sussex record office holds their death records to 1930 although i'm not sure what it will say.  This is my first workhouse or asylum death so i have no idea what to expect.

ideally i'd like to find her headstone for any clues about family. The lady did have grown up children so i expect they would have given her a proper headstone, and i believe she was a widow also. She is not amongst the burials on sfhg webpages. Do you think a workhouse death would have been as much a random burial as any other or would it have been designated?
if it helps she is:   sarah ann perry   died 3rd qtr hastings  1911  aged 81

appreciate any help thanks

I hope you are not disappointed - the chances are there may not be a headstone. It depends why she was in the workhouse, if it was because the family had fallen on bad times they may have been too poor to put up a headstone.

It might be worth contacting the cemetery office here and asking if they have any records  http://www.hastings.gov.uk/community_living/cemetery_crematorium/cem_crem_access/

Also just because she died in the workhouse it does not mean she was buried by them. It was not uncommon for relatives to take the body away for a private burial - this would be noted in the discharge register if the case. As the death is in 1906 you should be able to look up the record or ask the archives to do a search (probably paid)
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

I see from your profile you are not a million miles fron Sussex, so it would be well worth a visit to Lewis and look through what workhouse records they have.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

sorry the death was in 1911, i recall there being another death of the same name which i checked out but it was not her, i think this may be your 1906 death.

with regard to the lewes record office yes but it is closed while they move premises i believe.

I know where that main cemetery is so i might be able to ask there or have a look around one day.

I know one of her previous census records said midwife - sick, and then the next she was in the workhouse.

cheers

Ah yes she's recorded as Sarah A Perry not Sarah Ann hence why I missed her

What you could do whilst the record office is closed is see who has the burial records for the cemetery you mentioned and see if they \ you can do a lookup for a burial there. (Its probably the local council, unless its been privatised and there may be a charge)

well the sarah ann perry for my index is buried at the ridge cemetery, info courtesy of the friends of the cemetery.  They have said they will have a look for an MI.

She may perhaps be buried with her husband which might finally clear his name up, he's been like the invisible man lol.

thanks
