Evan 'Gibby' Jones & Rorke's Drift

My Dad (now deceased) used to say that our Jones family was related to Evan 'Gibby' Jones of B Company, 24th Foot (later South Wales Borderers) who won a VC at Rorke's Drift.

Seeing as Gibby's 'real' name was Cosgrove and not Jones, I've struggled to see how we could be related unless it's through the female line. Does anyone have any clue as to whom he was married? I can find Evan Jones in the 1911 census at 42 Lledan crescent, Welshpool but there's no record of a wife there and presumably he was in South Africa in 1901 (or at least out of the country).

Newspaper reports have him at 18 Union Street in 1915.

If anyone has any ideas as to where to look next, I'd be grateful!
