Loyal Protestant Home - New Westminster, BC
« on: Thursday 15 August 13 17:51 BST (UK) »
I understand that this was an Orphanage Association.

Can I take that all nformation of inmates during the WW2 period has been expunged from the births Marriages and Deaths indexes??  Is there any chance of discovering theor names and dates of birth???

The four children in question were certainly not orphaned and appear to have been abandoned by their mother in 1943 while her husband was in Europe at war.

He ceased payment to his wife of $35 per month and transferred it on 1 Jul 1943 to the Loyal Protestant Home - New Westminster BC [Guardians of 4 children]

Edwin George Wickens m Mary isabella Agnes Sloan 23 Oct 1935.

Their 1935 marriage was dissolved in 1947.

Any help in finding these births will be much appreciated.

Thank you and best wishes

Mark ;)

There are no Central registries/indexes in Canada for BMDs.  Canada has very strict privacy laws and each province imposes its own even further.  Additionally, some provinces are more research friendly than others so researching in Canada can be challenging.
As a guide BMD Records are only available for births more than a 100 years ago, marriages 80 years ago and deaths 70 years ago.
So you can see from that how tight the privacy laws make it in trying to get information.
It will probably be a very difficult task to locate the children.

Red messaged but had it typed so will post anyway.

In general, births in Canada are protected by privacy laws. BMDs come under provincial jurisdiction and each sets its own accessibility rules. In the case of BC, births are protected for 120 years, so are currently available to the public up to 1903. This weblink has info about the BMDs ....

I believe one can apply for certificates from more recent dates but would have to meet specific elligibility conditions. See here ....

You may want to check records for both of her marriages, you do not give dates of children but some may have been from her brief first marriage, or from the period between her marriages when she still could have named the children "Robinson", or "Sloan":

Elvin Henry Robinson =
m: Dec 8, 1933, divorced: Oct 4, 1935

Edwin George Wickens =
m: Oct 26, 1935 , DCO: April 3, 1947

Side note: She got remarried within 22 days of her divorce finalizing.  Strangely enough, Elvin Robinson got remarried 4 days earlier :)

Thank you very much, all of you.

120 year ban on births is ridiculous, and must be infuriating for you Canadian Researchers.  We are spoilt being able to get up to beyond the millenium on BDM.

Have you any idea whether she married post 1947?? And is there any chance of getting a print out of her first and any later marriages. I was sent a link to her Wickens marriage.
Best wishes
Mark ;)

Sandra

I fully understand the problem regarding births, though cannot fathom why it has been done that way!!!

On the other thread, you sent me a picture of Ted Wickens marriage to Milady Sloan.  Could you possibly please have a snoop to get the detail of her initial marriage to Elvin Robinson, and any subsequent marriages.

Best wishes and thanks

Mark ;)

Hi!

They are free here:

http://search-collections.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/Genealogy/basicSearch

If you use the archive site, you have to pay.

I looked for her (post 2nd divorce) for marriages under all 3 of her names, and could not find her.  I also looked for death records but nothing caught my eye.  Maybe you will have better luck.

A sneaky way to look for the children (if she stayed in BC) is to search for their first names in the marriage registries (most unique name first :) )...it takes a long time, but you may be able to find a last name.

Have fun!

Mark

Thank you, I shall.

Regarding the children, I wanted any Wickens /Sloan offspring, but that isn't going to happen!!!

I wonder if she moved after 1947 out of BC or went to the USA maybe.

Thank you

Mark ;)
